Question 1

What services does the Ocean County Mosquito Commission provide?

Accepted Answer

The Ocean County Mosquito Commission provides a range of services to help control the mosquito population, including trapping and monitoring adult mosquitoes, ground larviciding, and adulticiding when necessary. They also conduct aerial larviciding in the salt marshes.

Question 2

How does the commission monitor and control mosquitoes?

Accepted Answer

The commission uses four primary trapping methods to collect adult mosquitoes, including gravid traps, CDC traps, light traps, and resting boxes. Their inspectors make weekly circuits to look for breeding sites and treat them with a biological larvicide called B.t.i. (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis). They also perform continuous checks of the salt marshes by helicopter and on foot.

Question 3

What is the commission's approach to adulticiding?

Accepted Answer

Adulticiding, or the spraying of adult mosquitoes, is used by the commission only in the event of extremely high numbers of adult mosquitoes or in the presence of virus activity. It is used as an additional measure to their primary focus on larviciding.

Question 4

How can the public get involved?

Accepted Answer

The public can stay informed about the commission's activities and updates by visiting their website and following their official Facebook page. The website also provides information on "bid requests" and "requests for qualifications" for goods and services contracts.
